Game Speed

Gary Schofield, MAT, CSCS*D, RSCC*E

Description:

As almost every coach knows, speed can be a game-changing weapon. For too many years, it was believed that speed was a trait that you were born with. But as our understanding of athletic development has grown over the last few decades, we now understand that speed is a skill and therefore, can be developed. Coach Schofield will walk you through how he implements a complete speed development series focused on acceleration and max velocity. Exercises will be demonstrated and a plan provided to develop the ability to rapidly separate from (proactive) OR close the distance to (reactive) an opponent. However, there is more to game speed than running fast. Agility is a key component needed to create a response in (proactive) and/or respond to (reactive) an opponent. True agility in sport demands that the athlete efficiently and effectively move into and out of specific positions. Coach Loren Landow states it best when he says, “joint position dictates muscle function.” In this presentation, Coach Schofield will demonstrate how to program the athlete to maximize both speed and agility to create an explosive athlete in sport!

The audience will learn how to

  • Demonstrate how horizontal and vertical force emphasis changes during acceleration and maximal velocity phases of a sprint.
  • Design and develop a progressive system to develop acceleration and max velocity including proper warm-up and prep series, technique progressions, patterning, proper loading (volume, resistance & distance) & evaluation.
  • Evaluate and assess the importance of recovery on speed development and identify where it fits in a macro, meso, and micro cycle.
  • Understand how to break down the demands of agility into a developmental model to allow specific focus on areas of need.
  • Design and develop a progressive system to develop agility including proper warm-up and prep series, technique progressions, proper exercise selection & progression, loading (volume, resistance & distance) & evaluation.
  • Evaluate and assess agility using closed and open testing and identify individual athletic needs.
