My Sports Dietitian: Eat 2 Win

“Let food be thy medicine and let me be your nutrition guide.”

Sports Dietitian

Gabriela Alfonso, MS, RDN, LDN, ISAK-1

Gabriela Alfonso is a bilingual performance dietitian from Miami, FL. She studied at Florida State University where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics and walked onto the FSU Women’s Basketball team. This is when she truly understood the impact of properly fueling and recovering to maximize training and improve performance.

She later received her Master’s Degree in Sport Nutrition with an emphasis on Sustainability from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. While obtaining her Master’s, she worked at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs in the main dining facility, where she expanded her culinary skillset, helped fuel elite athletes of all ages, and supported USOC Performance Nutrition in hosting cooking classes for Team USA Track & Field and US National Swim Team athletes.

Gabriela’s private practice, Vitamin G Nutrition, is a performance and wellness nutrition consulting practice that uses hands-on nutrition education and coaching to help athletes achieve their goals and potential. Within the last 5 years, she has enjoyed her experiences working with athletes in the MLB; D1 sports including football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, golf; D2 sports including basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, cross-country; elite swimming with Ford Aquatics; and the Fire Department.

For Gabriela, nutrition is much more than a meal plan or a set of rules to follow. It is about continuously assessing the body’s needs for both health and performance, and learning realistic, practical ways to implement healthy, sustainable diet changes and habits. Gabriela’s nutrition philosophy includes balance, flexibility, variety, a food-first approach and enjoying life. As a Cuban-American, she loves cooking traditional Hispanic foods and sharing them with family and friends. In her spare time, Gabriela enjoys trying new foods, weight training, cycling, yoga, gardening and traveling
